Designed by travel poster legendary illustrator David Klein, this is an authentic, original, full bleed style of TWA Hong Kong, circa 1960s. Howard Hughes’ Trans World Airlines hired Klein in the 1960s to create posters for the glamorous vacation destinations of the era. This poster depicts a collage of a brightly colored lady, overlaid with smaller images from Hong Kong. We can see a festival dragon, traditional ships, a tall pagoda, and variations of local people doing traditional jobs. The silhouette of the entire image has edges that echo the shapes of the ships, and the vibrant color palette on a creamy white background is strong and exciting.
David Klein began as a watercolor artist in the 1930’s and after World War 2, during which he served in the army, became one of the most in-demand and prolific commercial artists of his generation. He is best known for his vibrant and compelling airline travel poster designs. His TWA poster of New York City was added to the permanent collection of the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York in 1957.
Through his long and storied career in commercial illustration he also designed such notable and beautiful posters as The Gauntlet movie poster, the Barry Lyndon poster, and The Island Of Dr. Moreau poster.
