This vintage advertisement appeared in the pages of Le Rire magazine in 1895. It is the first poster commissioned by George Richard upon opening his new bicycle dealership in the 17th arrondisement in Paris, pre-dating their four leaf clover logo. The female cyclist, holds a lantern in front of her as she rides a bicycle to Paris from the Fontainebleau Forest. The two feathered wings on the sides of her hat reference Mercury, both the God of trade and the God of travelers. There is a name under the word Paris, perhaps of the poster artist, saying Garnier SC. There is also a hint of a fingerprint from the print shop, a serendipitous little detail.
This advert is double sided, there are illustrations of people on the reverse side, as it would have appeared as a page in the magazine Le Rire in 1895. This piece is not linenbacked because the image on the reverse side would show through. There is small edge wear and a tear in the border, which would be covered in a frame. This piece has been professionally deacidified and cleaned.
